This 14k gold Edwardian pencil case is a rare piece representing the four vices of the Hindu concept of Kali Yuga, or “the age of vice.”
Rectangular in shape, long and narrow, the case is decorated with raised details on both sides. The lower tip slides and can be removed, allowing a small pencil to be inserted into the hollow body. The reliefs depict a dancing woman, a card game, a bottle of champagne, and a racehorse. These images refer to Kama (desire), the vice of sensual desire and indulgence; Krodha (violence), the vice of cruelty and loss of compassion; Madya (intoxication) and its destructive path; and Juta (greed), the reckless pursuit of wealth at any cost.
The whole constitutes an artistic commentary on the ethical dilemmas of the Edwardian era, and was perhaps worn with a certain irony, both to condemn and to celebrate the moral decline observed at the beginning of the 20th century.
The case is fitted with a 5.5 x 7 mm bail and can be worn as a pendant. It measures 3 1/4” x 7/16” and weighs 12 g.
The lower piece is marked “14k 3” as well as the maker’s mark: a B crossed by a trident, the mark of Battin & Co., a major jewelry manufacturer at the turn of the century in Newark, New Jersey.
