Rectangular ring with faceted black stone, set in gold, dating from the 1840s (Victorian era).
This ring could have belonged to a merchant and most likely served as a touchstone for testing gold. A touchstone is a piece of fine-grained dark slate or jasper, formerly used to test gold alloys by observing the color of the streak they leave on it. The black stone is cut "table" style, offering a smooth and functional upper surface for gold testing.
The stone shows signs of wear, as the ring was both a piece of jewelry and a utilitarian object. The gold is 18 carats; the ring is not hallmarked. The yellow gold contrasts with the deep black color of the stone. The band features an oval-shaped design and the stone measures approximately 1.3 cm.
