This 14K gold ring features a finely carved shell cameo in very high relief. Dating from the Victorian era, it illustrates the popularity of classical Greek figures in the jewelry of that period.
This young woman wears flowers holding back her hair, with curls framing her face. She wears a flowing Greek dress and has a serene expression. Carved from shell, the female figure appears in the white section, while the background is a dusty pink. The cameo is in very high relief, with three-quarters of the profile in three dimensions. This high relief gives the young woman an ethereal quality, as if she were in motion, about to emerge from the ring and take flight.
The cameo is set in a 14K gold bezel fitted to its shape. The ring has a solid gold back and a double-wire shank.
There is slight wear on the young woman's nose: viewed from the front, it is not noticeable, but it is more visible in profile. A slight crack runs across the young woman's forehead; this is a natural feature of the shell, adding to the organic quality of the piece. The young woman is very beautiful, with defined features and superb details. This is a special ring, with a very lovely presence when worn on the hand.
The ring measures 1” x 3/4”. The young woman has a depth of 7/16”. The band measures 1/8” wide. The ring weighs 8.8 g. Unmarked. Photographed in a presentation box only; the ring is not sold with this box.
