Striking Victorian snake ring, dating from around 1880. This sculptural jewel coils around the finger in rich 18 ct yellow gold. Its engraved surfaces and curved lines already foreshadow the Art Nouveau taste for more fluid natural forms. The three snake heads are set with old-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 1.24 ct in total, of light yellow color and VVS to VS clarity. Both decorative and symbolic, it reflects the enduring 19th-century fascination with the snake, an emblem of renewal, mystery, and faithful attachment.
- Type of jewelry: ring.
- Condition: very good condition.
- Country of origin: unknown.
- Style: Victorian. Victorian decorative arts refers to the style of decorative arts from the Victorian era, known for its eclecticism, the revival and reinterpretation of historical styles, as well as the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the Middle East and Asia into furniture, furnishings, and interior decoration. Victorian design is widely regarded as having sometimes lapsed into an excess of ornamentation. The Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, the Anglo-Japanese style, and the Art Nouveau style all find their beginnings at the end of the Victorian era.
- Style features: late Victorian period / early Art Nouveau. The subject of this piece, although typical of the 19th century, heralds the arrival of the Art Nouveau style.
- Period: circa 1880.
- Source of inspiration: Mother Nature.
- Theme: snakes. Snakes are among the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. There is considerable overlap in the symbolic values they represent across different cultures. Part of this overlap is due to the common historical ancestry of contemporary symbols; another part is linked to the shared biological characteristics of snakes. Much can be said about them: they have been revered since the Middle Ages and constitute a powerful religious symbol with varied meanings, such as death and resurrection. They have also been associated with healing and river gods, and likewise evoke fertility, wisdom, and the capacity to heal.
- Additional information: the triple arrangement gives the ring an added symbolic resonance, as if the traditional meanings of the snake, linked to renewal and attachment, were reinforced through repetition, though this cannot be stated with certainty.
- Material: 18 ct yellow gold, tested with a touchstone.
- Diamonds: three old mine-cut brilliant diamonds, with an estimated total weight of approximately 1.24 ct, light yellow color, VVS to VS clarity.
- The listed diamond weights, color grades, and clarities are approximate unless otherwise stated, as the diamonds are not removed from their settings in order to preserve the integrity of the piece.
- All diamonds, regardless of their cut or shape, present in the antique jewelry and vintage pieces, are verified as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.
- Birthstone: diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.
- Hallmarks: “18K”, indicating 18 ct gold.
- Dimensions: width of the band at the top of the ring: 2.26 cm (0.89 inch).
- Weight: 5.50 g (3.54 dwt).
- Ring size: 61 (FR).
