Portuguese ring from the late 18th century, whose elongated bezel in silver is densely set with colorless stones traditionally described as Minas Novas, most likely rock crystal, mounted on a yellow gold band. The jewel belongs to a distinctive tradition of Portuguese jewelry, in which colorless stones set over foil were used to create a rich and luminous effect reminiscent of diamond-set jewelry.
- Type of jewelry: ring.
- Condition: very good condition, especially considering the age of the jewel.
- Country of origin: although it bears no legible control mark, this ring is considered to be of Portuguese origin, based on its shape, construction, and the type of colorless stones traditionally associated with Portuguese Minas Novas jewelry.
- Style: Rococo, or late Rococo taste, with the asymmetrical and richly clustered ornamentation typical of much 18th-century jewelry. In this ring, the style is expressed less through scrolls than through the lively arrangement of foil-backed stones on the elongated oval bezel.
- Style characteristics: in the jewelry of this period, the Rococo taste often persisted in richly set, light-reflecting forms, even when architecture and the decorative arts were already moving toward Neoclassicism. The irregular yet balanced composition of this ring, with its large central stone surrounded by smaller stones, fits well within this late 18th-century taste for brilliance, movement, and ornamental abundance.
- Period: circa 1780, late 18th century to early 19th century.
- Material: 18K yellow gold and silver, the silver being used for the stone-set bezel and the gold for the band and the structure on the reverse.
- Technique: the colorless stones are foil-backed, a technique used in antique jewelry to enhance reflection, brightness, and depth before modern electric lighting. In this ring, the foil plays an essential visual role, giving the stones the lively sparkle that made Minas Novas jewelry so sought-after.
- Minas Novas: the stones in this ring are traditionally described as Minas Novas, a term associated with Portuguese jewelry set with colorless Brazilian materials. In the antique jewelry trade, this name is often used for rock crystal, although historical and scientific usage is not always perfectly uniform and may also be linked to other colorless stones from Brazil. This is why the stones are described cautiously as Minas Novas-type stones, most likely rock crystal.
- Stones: 51 faceted colorless stones, traditionally described as Minas Novas and probably rock crystal, mounted to create the luminous appearance of a diamond-set jewel.
- Gemstones are often treated to improve their color or clarity. The stones in this piece have not been tested for possible treatments, unless otherwise indicated.
- Hallmarks: illegible remnants, insufficient for a formal identification of the hallmarks.
- Dimensions: bezel width 3.37 cm.
- Weight: 10.40 g.
- Ring size: 57 (FR).
- Resizing possible.
