From the historic mines of Mogok, the “Valley of Rubies,” this entirely unheated spinel is exceptionally rare at this weight: untreated Burmese spinels over 5 carats are among the rarest colored gemstones on the international market.
For centuries, spinel was mistaken for ruby; several famous “rubies” in the Crown Jewels are in fact spinels.
