Akoya cultured pearl ring in 18K yellow gold
Ring adorned with an Akoya cultured pearl in 18K yellow gold.
This ring reveals a naturalistic elegance of great delicacy. At its center, a perfectly round Akoya cultured pearl draws the eye. Its intense luster and slightly iridescent reflections reveal all the nobility of this Japanese pearl. Set on a gold stem, it seems to float atop the band, allowing its orient to fully express itself. The shoulders, in yellow gold, unfold in engraved scrolls inspired by acanthus leaves or stylized feathers. These organic curves bring movement and lightness to the setting. Each engraved detail animates the gold and reflects the light with subtlety. The body of the ring is made of 18-carat green gold. Indeed, it is a rare and refined alloy with subtle spring-like reflections, particularly prized during the Belle Époque. This allowed naturalistic motifs to be enhanced and brought a delicate and original nuance to the jewel.
This piece fits into a neo-classical and romantic aesthetic, highly appreciated in the 1940s-1950s. After the geometric rigor of the Art Deco, jewelers returned to supple and vegetal lines, celebrating femininity and softness. Since Antiquity, the pearl has symbolized purity, wisdom, and timeless elegance. Thanks to Kokichi Mikimoto, pioneer of cultured pearls in Japan, the Akoya pearl experienced a spectacular rise in the 20th century and became a staple of European jewelry.
