The bird is made using a meticulous technique that involves creating an image from small pieces of opaque enameled glass called tesserae. Micro-mosaics were first developed in the second half of the 18th century by the Vatican Mosaic Workshop. In the 19th century, many independent workshops dedicated themselves to producing these small souvenirs to meet the demand from travelers.
