The marquise ring owes its name to the Marquise de Pompadour, favorite of King Louis XV. Captivated by the beauty of her smile, the king is said to have requested a stone cut in her likeness. Thus was born the marquise cut, an elongated oval shape with pointed ends, which gracefully elongates the finger.
