At the heart of this ring lies a 22.04-carat sapphire of the rare Ottu variety, extracted from the gem-bearing gravels of Sri Lanka and entirely unheated. Certified by Carat Gem Lab (Marly, France), report no. CGL35543: natural sapphire, intense blue, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), no indication of heating.
The Ottu phenomenon occurs within the crystal itself. Nature concentrates the blue chromophore in a thin outer envelope while the heart of the stone remains almost colorless — a zoning that only the most skilled Sri Lankan lapidaries know how to interpret. Cut in pain de sucre — four gentle shoulders rising toward a domed summit — this zoning is transformed into an optical instrument: light enters the dome, reflects off the internal surfaces, and passes twice through the saturated layer. The eye perceives the result as a deep, dense, almost velvety blue — visually close to a composite doublet, but achieved in a single intact crystal. Dimensions: 15.09 × 12.79 × 10.01 mm.
The setting is designed for this optical scenario, not around it. The platinum — a metal with a cool white tone and neutral light return — is a deliberate choice: it introduces no color of its own into the reflection system and preserves the purity of the chromophore. The basket beneath the stone is left sufficiently open to allow light to enter the dome from every angle, maintaining the double passage through the colored layer. Brilliant-cut diamonds are set along the shoulders as a structural counterpoint — their lively sparkle frames the dense, calm depth of the Ottu and enhances its legibility.

The pain de sucre is the silhouette historically reserved for the most important sapphires of the Mughal courts and for the center stones of Cartier commissions of the mid-century.
