Edwardian ring in 18K yellow gold, made in England in 1901, illustrating the refined elegance and craftsmanship of this period.
At the center is a green garnet doublet, measuring approximately 7.5 × 5.3 mm, displaying a luminous green hue, rich in depth and character.
The central stone is framed by rose-cut diamonds of approximately 1.4 mm each, whose soft sparkle complements the green stone.
A green garnet doublet is not a solid green garnet. It is a composite stone made of two layers bonded together:
- Upper layer: a thin slice of natural garnet, which provides the color and luster.
- Lower layer: generally colorless glass, quartz, or another transparent stone, which provides thickness and strength.
This technique was mainly used in the 19th century and the early 20th century, particularly during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. By placing a thin layer of precious garnet on a colorless base, it was possible to create the appearance of a larger stone.
For a luxury description, it is therefore preferable not to write that it is a “natural green garnet,” because a garnet doublet is not a solid garnet.
The ring bears its original English hallmarks, including the 750 fineness mark for gold, the Birmingham Assay Office mark, and the date letter B for 1901.
