This remarkable ring cameo in agate and 14K rose gold features the portrait of a gentleman, depicted in profile, wearing a hat and gazing into the distance. The agate is a dark reddish-brown, a lovely complement to the rose gold in which the stone is set. The portrait is in very high relief and rendered with an impressive level of detail: the hair, beard, clothing, and facial expression are finely carved into the stone. The agate is claw-set, and the cameo sits elevated on the finger. The 14K rose gold band features an ornate pattern reminiscent of Corinthian columns. The open back of the ring allows light to highlight the deep reds of the stone.
Around the 1900s, it was traditional to engrave portraits of important figures on jewelry of that era, most often Greek figures. This may have been a lady's ring, and the portrait would represent someone important in her life. Whatever the story of this ring, it was carved with great care and craftsmanship.
