Vintage Audemars Piguet wristwatch in 18K yellow gold, from Swiss watch production circa 1970, a transitional period during which the maison produced some of the most refined shaped watches of the postwar era, in the years immediately preceding the launch of the Royal Oak in 1972, which would redefine the brand.
The watch is built around a fitted square-shaped case measuring 28 × 28 mm, with an anthracite grey dial centered by an applied AP logo at twelve o’clock and gold wire hands indicating the hours. The simplicity of the dial is deliberate, characteristic of Audemars Piguet’s approach to dress watches of this period, where the maison allowed the proportions of the case and the quality of the movement to carry the watch rather than dial complications.
Inside the case beats the Audemars Piguet caliber 2003, a manually wound mechanical movement branded by the maison and particularly appreciated by collectors of vintage AP. The 18K gold caseback bears the number 76245, the DT import hallmark with Maltese cross, and is branded Audemars Piguet on the inside. The integrated 18K gold bracelet ends with a ladder-style clasp also branded by the maison, sized for a wrist of approximately 17 cm.
The watch is presented in its original Audemars Piguet box and accompanied by a service certificate dated 1980, documentation that confirms both the authenticity of the watch and the care it received over the course of its life. For collectors of vintage Audemars Piguet, the combination of the original presentation box and period service documents significantly enhances the piece beyond a watch alone: it represents a complete and documented example of the pre-Royal Oak production of the maison.
The watch was confirmed to be in working order at the time of appraisal, sold without guarantee of future functioning. Gross weight: 63.9 g, with a substantial 18K gold content reflecting the significant goldsmithing work of both the case and the integrated bracelet.
