This Art Deco pendant in platinum, dating from around 1920, is composed of a succession of crisp geometric sections, ending in a tapered and architectural drop. An old brilliant-cut diamond forms the central focal point, surrounded by smaller diamonds in finely detailed settings. Its articulated construction gives the pendant a slight impression of movement, while the central diamond catches the light with a soft, antique sparkle. Delicate in its proportions yet full of character, it evokes a jewel once chosen for a very personal second-hand.

  • Type of jewel: pendant on chain.
  • Condition: very good condition.
  • Country of origin: unknown.
  • Style: Art Deco jewel, style corresponding to the period from approximately 1915 to 1940. Its typical characteristics include platinum settings with crisp grids and stepped outlines, pavé-set diamonds, and onyx in bold lines, in a cubist and abstract vocabulary. Typical motifs include stepped patterns, fan motifs, geometric bracelets, straight lines, repeated rectilinear designs, contrasting light and dark panels, double-clip brooches, as well as architectural ring and bracelet forms. This style was influenced by the French decorative arts, the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Cubism, the Ballets Russes, Egyptian archaeological discoveries, and modern industry.
  • Style specifics: abstract motifs and geometric forms are typical of the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the supple organic forms of Art Nouveau to embrace a modern, decorative, and geometric design. It was influenced by Neoclassicism, Cubism, Modernism, Futurism, and other movements of the early 20th century. Its popularity peaked in Europe in the 1920s and remained strong in the United States during the 1930s. Unlike many movements, Art Deco was primarily decorative rather than political or philosophical.
  • Period: circa 1920.
  • Material: platinum, tested with a touchstone.
  • Diamonds: one old brilliant-cut diamond with an approximate total weight of 0.74 ct, color and clarity K/L, SI.
  • Diamonds: seventeen single-cut diamonds, also called 8/8, with an approximate total weight of 0.50 ct, color and clarity G/I, VS/SI.
  • Total number of diamonds: 18 pieces.
  • Total diamond weight: approximately 1.24 ct.
  • The stated diamond weights, color grades, and clarity grades are approximate, unless otherwise indicated, as the diamonds are not removed from their settings in order to preserve the integrity of the piece.
  • All diamonds in antique jewelry and vintage jewelry, regardless of their cut or shape, are verified by the IJGC laboratory as natural.
  • Birthstones: diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.
  • Hallmarks: no trace.
  • Dimensions: pendant height 3.60 cm, chain length 42.00 cm.
  • Weight: 6.10 g.
