Dating from around 1930, this Art Deco ring plays on the striking contrast between sparkling diamonds and deep black onyx. Its distinctive geometric design is softened by the warmth of the yellow gold band, while the platinum brings a cool brightness to the top section. Small but full of character, it captures the glamour and confident elegance of the Art Deco era.

  • Type of jewelry: ring
  • Condition: very good condition
  • Country of origin: unknown
  • Style: Art Deco jewelry, a style corresponding to jewelry from about 1915 to 1940. Typical characteristics include platinum settings forming crisp grids and stepped outlines, pavé diamonds, and onyx in bold lines, in a cubist and abstract vocabulary. Typical motifs include stepped patterns, fan motifs, geometric bracelets, straight-line motifs, repetitive rectilinear designs, contrasting light and dark panels, double clip brooch compositions, as well as architectural ring and bracelet forms. This style was shaped by the French decorative arts, the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Cubism, the Ballets Russes, Egyptian archaeological discoveries, and modern industry.
  • Style specifics: Art Deco. Abstract motifs and geometric shapes are typical of the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the flowing organic forms of Art Nouveau to embrace modern, decorative, and geometric design. It was influenced by Neoclassicism, Cubism, Modernism, Futurism, and other early 20th-century movements. Its popularity peaked in Europe in the 1920s and remained strong in the United States in the 1930s. Unlike many movements, Art Deco was primarily decorative rather than political or philosophical.
  • Period: circa 1930
  • Material: 18K yellow gold and platinum, tested with a touchstone
  • Diamonds: three old brilliant-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 0.16 ct, color and clarity H/J, SI/I
  • Additional diamonds: 34 rose-cut diamonds and chips. A chip is a simplified rose-cut diamond, a small diamond splinter that may have a few polished facets. The weight of the rose-cut diamonds and chips is unknown, which is normal in the trade for this type of diamond.
  • The weights, color grades, and clarity grades of the diamonds are approximate, unless otherwise stated, because the diamonds are not removed from their settings in order to preserve the integrity of the piece.
  • All diamonds in our antique jewelry and vintage jewelry, regardless of their cut or shape, are verified as natural by the IJGC laboratory.
  • Gemstones: two triangular onyxes
  • Birthstones: diamond is the birthstone for the month of April and onyx for the month of July.
  • Hallmark: “750,” indicating 18K gold
  • Dimensions: width of the ring head 1.00 cm (0.39 inch)
  • Weight: 3.50 g (2.25 dwt)
  • Ring size: 52 (FR)
  • Resizing: free resizing, except for extreme resizing which may incur a charge.
