Art Nouveau brooch dating from around 1910, depicting a chimera masterfully crafted in 18k gold. A piece that embodies the spirit of the Art Nouveau movement: the rejection of the ordinary, the celebration of the artisan’s hand, and the transformation of jewelry into pure art.
The chimera, a mythological creature, was a motif appreciated by Art Nouveau jewelers, drawn to its mysterious and fantastical character as well as to the technical challenges it presented to the goldsmith. The piece is set with a natural ruby and an old-cut diamond of approximately 0.10 ct each.
What makes this brooch particularly remarkable is the equal attention paid to its reverse, as finely worked as the front, characteristic of the finest workshop productions of the period and a detail that distinguishes truly exceptional pieces from ordinary ones.
The brooch bears the French eagle’s head hallmark confirming the fineness of the 18k gold, as well as the maker’s mark A(cross)K, identified as that of André Kauffer, a French goldsmith of the Art Nouveau period.
