Style
Between the Victorian era and Art Nouveau, Victorian decorative arts refer to the style of decorative arts from the Victorian period. This period is characterized by an eclectic revival and an original interpretation of historical styles, as well as the introduction of intercultural influences from the Middle East and Asia into furniture, accessories, and interior decoration. Victorian design is often seen as having succumbed to a regrettable excess of ornamentation.

The Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, the Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau have their origins at the end of the Victorian era. Art Nouveau is an international movement and style of art, architecture, and applied arts—especially the decorative arts—that peaked at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1905).

The term "Art Nouveau" means "new art" in French. It is also known as "Jugendstil," which means "youth style" in German, in reference to the magazine Jugend that popularized it, and in Italy as Stile Liberty, named after the London department store Liberty & Co., which helped popularize it. In reaction to the academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic motifs, notably floral and plant-inspired, as well as fluid, stylized, curvilinear forms.

Art Nouveau is a design approach in which artists should work on everything, from architecture to furniture, making art an integral part of daily life.

Technique
The cameo is a sculpting technique, or a piece of jewelry or a container made using this method. It features a relief image (positive). There are three main materials used for cameo sculpture: shell or agate (in which case it is called cameo in hardstone), and glass. Cameos can be made by inserting a sculpted relief, such as a portrait, onto a contrasting colored background. This is known as an assembled cameo. A cameo can also be carved directly into a stratified or banded material, such as (banded) agate or layered glass, where each layer has a different color. Dyes are sometimes used to enhance these colors. Cameos are often worn as jewelry. Highly artistically refined stone cameos were made in Greece as early as the 6th century BC. They were very popular in Ancient Rome, and one of the most famous stone cameos of this period is the Gemma Claudia, made for Emperor Claudius. This technique has since experienced periodic revivals in popularity, notably at the beginning of the Renaissance, then in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Additional Information
The child's features do not match any documented child portrait from Western royal families of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and no match has been found in the known iconography of this period. The signature "A. v. Dongen" is not associated with any royal commission, and no archival link allows it to be attributed to a court artist. Child portrait cameos were common personal mementos in wealthy families; it is therefore very likely a privately commissioned portrait representing a non-royal child.

Signature
"A. v. Dongen", an otherwise unidentified artist with a Dutch surname.
