Perfume bottle – vinaigrette in silver-gilt
Early 19th century
Lovely perfume bottle in silver-gilt (silver 925 gilded), gourd-shaped, finely chiseled with decorative friezes. Each side is decorated with an openwork cartouche centered with an antique mask, framed by a delicate openwork decoration of foliage and birds. These cartouches open to reveal a small interior compartment, decorated with tortoiseshell. This hiding place was once used to slip in scented pastilles or perfumed crystals.
The bottle is closed with a finely sculpted stopper, depicting a small bearded figure holding in each hand what resembles two large plates. This stopper slides on two chains attached to either side of the bottle, ending in a large ring allowing it to be hung.
Has a signature on the ring: Arglan?
Height without cap or chain: approximately 6.6 cm
Height from top of character to base: approximately 9 cm
Height with ring (chain included): approximately 14 cm
Width (at chain attachments): approximately 4.3 cm
Gross weight: 27.8 g (silver - 925/1000, hallmarks: swan head)
Good overall condition for a piece of this period. Both compartments open; one of them closes less easily, probably due to a slight dent in the metal. The cap fits correctly but does not stay closed, due to the lack of an original watertight seal (cork or other material, now missing). It slides easily along the chain.
Note: A bottle comparable in shape and ingenious opening system — this time in gold — is kept at the Musée du Parfum (Fragonard collection-Paris) and dated between 1774 and 1780.
