Style
Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and a style of art, architecture, and applied art—especially the decorative arts—which reached its peak in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1905).
The term “Art Nouveau” means “new art” in French. It is also called Jugendstil, which means “young style” in German, after the magazine Jugend that promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty, after the London department store Liberty & Co., which popularized the style, and in the Netherlands, “Sla-olie-stijl,” meaning “salad oil style,” after an advertising poster for that product made in this style.
As a reaction to 19th-century academic art, it is characterized by organic motifs, notably floral and plant-inspired, as well as fluid, stylized curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design in which artists should work on all aspects, from architecture to furniture, integrating art into everyday life. Although Art Nouveau fell out of favor with the advent of 20th-century modernist styles, it is now considered an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and Modernism.

Style specifics
Art Nouveau – Although Art Nouveau adopted distinctly localized trends as its geographic spread expanded, some general characteristics are indicative of this form. A description published in Pan magazine of the Cyclamen wall hanging (1894) by Hermann Obrist described it as “sudden and violent curves generated by the crack of a whip,” which became famous at the beginnings of Art Nouveau.
Subsequently, not only did the work itself become better known as the Whiplash, but the term “whiplash” is frequently applied to the characteristic curves used by Art Nouveau artists. These decorative motifs, formed of dynamic, undulating, and fluid lines with a syncopated rhythm, are found in architecture, painting, sculpture, and other forms of Art Nouveau design. Additional information
Engagement rings were used during Roman times, but their return to the West only took place in the 13th century. The first documented use of a diamond ring to symbolize an engagement was that of Archduke Maximilian of Austria at the imperial court of Vienna in 1477, upon his engagement to Mary of Burgundy.
Before the 20th century, other types of engagement gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the bride-to-be often received a thimble rather than an engagement ring. This practice was particularly widespread among religious groups that rejected jewelry. Engagement rings only became the norm in the West at the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings only became widespread in the 1930s. Today, 80% of women are offered a diamond ring for their engagement. (Source: Wikipedia)
