Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and a style of art, architecture, and applied art—especially the decorative arts—which peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1905).
The term "Art Nouveau" means "new art" in French. It is also called Jugendstil, which means "youth style" in German, after the magazine Jugend that promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty, after the London department store Liberty & Co., which popularized the style, and in the Netherlands, "Sla-olie-stijl," meaning "salad oil style," after an advertising poster for that product made in this style.
As a reaction to 19th-century academic art, it is characterized by organic motifs, notably floral and plant-inspired, as well as fluid, stylized curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is a design approach in which artists should work on all aspects, from architecture to furniture, integrating art into everyday life. Although Art Nouveau fell out of favor with the advent of modernist styles in the 20th century, it is now considered an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and Modernism.

Stylistic specifics:
Art Nouveau – Although Art Nouveau adopted distinctly localized trends as its geographic spread expanded, certain general characteristics are indicative of this form. A description published in the magazine Pan of the wall hanging Cyclamen (1894) by Hermann Obrist described it as "sudden and violent curves generated by the crack of a whip," which became famous at the beginnings of Art Nouveau.
Thereafter, not only did the work itself become more commonly known as Whiplash, but the term "whiplash" is frequently applied to the characteristic curves used by Art Nouveau artists. These decorative motifs, formed of dynamic, undulating, and fluid lines with a syncopated rhythm, are found in the architecture, painting, sculpture, and other design forms of Art Nouveau.
