Art Nouveau - Art Nouveau (French for New Style) is an international movement and a style of art, architecture, and applied art—especially the decorative arts—that reached its peak popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1905).
The term "Art Nouveau" means "new art" in French. It is also called Jugendstil, which means "youth style" in German, after the magazine Jugend that promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty after the London department store Liberty & Co., which popularized the style, and in the Netherlands, "Sla-olie-stijl," which means "salad oil style," after an advertising poster for this product made in this style.
A reaction to 19th-century academic art, it is characterized by organic motifs, especially floral and plant-inspired, as well as fluid and stylized curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design in which artists should work on all aspects, from architecture to furniture, integrating art into everyday life. Art Nouveau – Although Art Nouveau adopted distinctly localized trends as its geographical spread extended, certain general characteristics are revealing of this form. A description published in the magazine Pan of the Cyclamen wall hanging (1894) by Hermann Obrist described it as "sudden and violent curves generated by the crack of a whip," which became famous at the beginnings of Art Nouveau.
Subsequently, not only did the work itself become better known as Whiplash, but the term "whiplash" is frequently applied to the characteristic curves of Art Nouveau artists. These decorative motifs, formed of dynamic, undulating, and fluid lines with a syncopated rhythm, are found in architecture, painting, sculpture, and other forms of Art Nouveau design.
