Iberian baroque earrings, circa 1725 – 18-carat gold with glass paste stones
Pair of Iberian earrings in 18-carat yellow gold, dating from around 1725. Their rounded setting is adorned with simple engraved baroque-style details and set with glass paste stones whose color ranges from dark green to purple, originally enhanced with colored foils. Although showing signs of wear, especially at the back, they remain attractive from the front. A characteristic example of early 18th-century Spanish or Portuguese jewelry, reflecting the taste and techniques of the period.

Style specifics
Baroque is an artistic and decorative style that developed shortly before 1600 and remained popular in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style around 1730. Born in Italy, it spread to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Only a classic, more or less austere version was popular in France under Louis XIV. This style, derived from the Renaissance, is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, vigorous movement, and rich ornamentation, inspired by classical sources, symmetrical as opposed to the asymmetry of the Rococo style that followed it.

Gemstones
Both stones are paste, displaying a dark green to violet sheen that varies with the light. This effect is probably due to remnants of colored foil once placed behind them, a technique commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries to enhance their brilliance.
