We present to you a very important pair of antique earrings made of Mediterranean red coral and gold. Originally from Palermo (Sicily), they were probably a wedding gift.
Two large oval earrings in repoussé gold, entirely decorated with red coral. This type of earring was called "a specchio" (mirror); it was traditionally a wedding gift.
Origin: Sicily, late 19th century. 14-karat yellow gold (touchstone tested). An old hallmark appears on the hooks. They are in perfect condition. In Italy, especially in the south, almost all women, rich or poor, wear coral jewelry.
Wearing red coral was (and still is) considered good protection against the evil eye and brings good luck.
