Victorian elegance: a diamond engagement ring, circa 1900
A magnificent example of late Victorian art, this engagement ring, dating from around 1900, reflects the era's taste for ornamentation. Of Belgian origin, it features two tones of precious metal: dominant 18-carat yellow gold, harmonizing with touches of white gold or platinum. Late Victorian era – Victorian decorative arts refer to the style of decorative arts of the Victorian period. This era is known for its eclectic revival and reinterpretation of historical styles, as well as for the introduction of intercultural influences from the Middle East and Asia into furniture, accessories, and interior decoration.
Victorian design is widely regarded as having shown a regrettable excess of ornament. The Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, the Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau all have their origins in the late Victorian era.

Additional information:
Engagement rings were used in Roman times, but their return to the West only took place in the 13th century. The first documented use of a diamond ring to symbolize engagement was by Archduke Maximilian of Austria at the Imperial Court of Vienna in 1477, upon his engagement to Mary of Burgundy.
Before the 20th century, other types of engagement gifts were common. Before the end of the 19th century, the future bride often received a thimble rather than an engagement ring. This practice was particularly widespread among religious groups that rejected jewelry. Engagement rings only became the norm in the West at the end of the 19th century, and diamond rings only became widespread in the 1930s. Today, 80% of women are offered a diamond ring for their engagement. (Source: Wikipedia)
