Romantic Whiplash: Art Nouveau pendant with diamonds, sapphire and rare pearl
This magnificent Art Nouveau pendant dating from around 1900, crafted in 18-carat yellow gold, features the flowing design and natural motifs characteristic of the movement. At the heart of the pendant is a cabochon sapphire, flanked by two senailles (diamonds) and two delicate seed pearls. A rare Mississippi dog tooth pearl gracefully hangs below, enhancing the organic lines of the pendant. Inspired by the iconic curves of Art Nouveau, this piece embodies the aesthetic and romantic spirit of the era, offering both a connection to nature and a sense of refined beauty.

Edwardian – The Edwardian era, or Edwardian period in the United Kingdom, covers the reign of King Edward VII, from 1901 to 1910. The death of Queen Victoria in January 1901 and the accession of her son, Edward, marked the beginning of a new century and the end of the Victorian era. While Victoria had shunned society, Edward was the leader of a fashionable elite who imposed a style influenced by continental European art and fashions, perhaps due to the king’s passion for travel. This era was marked by significant political changes, with sectors of society once largely excluded from power, such as workers and women, becoming increasingly politicized.

Style specifics
Art Nouveau – Although Art Nouveau adopted distinctly localized trends as its geographical spread expanded, certain general features are revealing of this form. A description published in the magazine Pan of Hermann Obrist’s Cyclamen wall hanging (1894) described it as “sudden violent curves generated by the crack of a whip,” which became famous at the beginnings of Art Nouveau.
Subsequently, not only did the work itself become better known as Coup de fouet, but the term “coup de fouet” is frequently applied to the characteristic curves employed by Art Nouveau artists. These decorative motifs, formed of dynamic, undulating and fluid lines with a syncopated rhythm, are found in architecture, painting, sculpture and other forms of Art Nouveau design. Diamonds
Two senailles. A senaille is a simplified rose-cut diamond, a small diamond chip sometimes with a few polished facets. We do not have the weight of these diamonds, which is common in our trade for senailles.
- All diamonds, regardless of size or shape, in our vintage and antique jewelry are verified as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.
- We do not sell synthetic (lab-grown) diamonds.
Gemstones
A cabochon sapphire
A baroque pearl from the Mississippi also called a "dog tooth" pearl.
Two seed beads
It is very common to treat gemstones to enhance their clarity or color. The item in question has not been tested in this regard.
Additional information
Dog tooth pearls are irregularly shaped freshwater pearls, often found in the Mississippi. Their elongated, tooth-like shape distinguishes them from the more common round pearls. Known for their organic appearance, these pearls develop naturally inside river mollusks, giving them unique shapes that reflect the natural conditions of their formation.
Birthstones
Diamond is the birthstone (or stone of the month) for April, sapphire for September, and pearl for June.
