Style
Halfway between late Victorian style and the Belle Époque, Victorian decorative arts refer to the style of decorative arts during the Victorian era. This era is known for its eclectic revival and reinterpretation of historical styles, as well as for the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the Middle East and Asia in furniture, accessories, and interior decoration.
Victorian design is widely regarded as having displayed a regrettable excess of ornamentation.
The Belle Époque is a period of European social history that began at the end of the 19th century and lasted until World War I. Taking place during the era of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the “Belle Époque” was named retrospectively, when it began to be considered a “golden age.” The great European powers, new technologies improved living conditions, and commercial arts adapted Renaissance and 18th-century styles to modern forms. In the United States, newly wealthy and emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable era was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this period overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian era and the period known as the Edwardian era.

Style specifics
The late Victorian or Aesthetic period – Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also known as the Victorian era (1837-1901), into three periods of about twenty years each: the Romantic Victorian period (1837-1860), the Grand Victorian period (1860-1880), and the Late Victorian or Aesthetic period (1880-1901).
We consider this to be the late Victorian or Aesthetic period.
The jewelry of this era evolved, moving from heavy pieces to smaller, more romantic pieces, often with whimsical motifs. Jewelers used diamonds and brilliant gemstones to create refined and elaborate feminine pieces.

Technique
Enameling is an ancient and widespread technique. The Egyptians of Antiquity applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese of Antiquity also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colorful result of fusing powdered glass onto a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and hardens to form a smooth, durable glassy coating on metal, glass, or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the Old High German smelzan (to melt) via Old French esmail. Used as a noun, “an enamel” refers to a generally small decorative object covered with a layer of enamel, such as champlevé or cloisonné (different techniques).
