Superb gold brooch by Georges Lenfant for Hermès Paris, circa 1960. Lenfant captures the duck in flight magnificently, with both wings up-stretched and neck long neck protruding forward. The detailing to the individual feathers and webbed feet is nothing short of exceptional. Crafted in 18 karat gold with emerald set eye, it's signed Hermès Paris with serial number and the Georges Lenfant maker's mark stamped on the pin.
Georges Lenfant was one of the most prolific, and certainly most talented, jewelers of the early 20th century. He designed for the top Parisian houses including Van Cleef, Mellerio said Meller, and Cartier, where he was a workmaster. His distinctive maker's mark was registered in 1909, and allowed his pieces to remain distinguishable regardless of where they were sold.
