Glimpses of grandeur: diamond earrings from the 1830s
Pair of earrings from the early Victorian era, dating from around 1830, reflecting the period's taste for ornamental grandeur. Crafted in 18-carat yellow gold, these earrings demonstrate the finesse of enameling, a technique vénérée since Antiquity. Each earring is adorned with two old brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 1.66 carats in total. The condition is considered good, with slight enamel wear, and perfectly reflects the historical narrative and aesthetic movements of the time, from Arts and Crafts to Art Nouveau.

Technique
Enameling is an ancient and widely used technique. The Egyptians of Antiquity applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese of Antiquity also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colored result of fusing glass powder onto a substrate by firing, generally between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and hardens to form a smooth and durable glassy coating on metal, glass, or ceramics. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the High German 'smelzan' (to melt) via Old French 'esmail.' Used as a noun, “an enamel” refers to a decorative object, generally small in size, covered with a layer of enamel, such as a champlevé or cloisonné (different techniques).
