Iberian baroque earrings, circa 1725 – 18-carat gold and paste stones set on metallic paper
Pair of Iberian earrings in 18-carat yellow gold, dating from around 1725. Their rounded settings are adorned with simple baroque-style engravings and set with paste stones whose color ranges from dark green to violet, originally enhanced with colored foils. Despite signs of wear and age, especially on the back, they retain all their charm. A characteristic example of early 18th-century Spanish or Portuguese jewelry, reflecting the tastes and techniques of the era.

Style specifics
Baroque is an artistic and decorative style that developed shortly before 1600 and remained fashionable in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style around 1730. Born in Italy, it spread to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Only a more classical but more austere version enjoyed some success in France under Louis XIV. This style, stemming from the Renaissance, is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, vigorous movement, and rich ornamentation inspired by classical sources. It is distinguished by its symmetry, in contrast to the asymmetry of the Rococo style that succeeded it.

Gemstones
These two stones are paste, displaying a dark green to violet sheen that changes with the light. This effect is most likely due to remnants of colored paper foils once placed behind them, a common technique in the 18th and 19th centuries to enhance their brilliance.
