Iberian baroque drop earrings in 18-carat yellow gold, circa 1750. Each earring is composed of two oval panels connected by a leafy knot and topped with delicate openwork. Set with a multitude of square and rectangular emeralds, their cool green contrasts with the warmth of the gold and the fine beaded edges. The domed shape and closed clasp give a beautiful depth to the profile and a soft amplitude when worn.

Style specifics
Baroque is an artistic and decorative style that developed shortly before 1600 and remained in vogue in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style around 1730. Born in Italy, it spread to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Only a more classical, but more austere, version had some success in France under Louis XIV. This style, stemming from the Renaissance, is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, vigorous movement, and rich ornamentation inspired by classical sources. It is distinguished by its symmetry, in contrast to the asymmetry of the Rococo style that followed.
