Victorian-style fox head tie pin, circa 1880, in 14-carat rose gold with a modeled silver mask. The alert muzzle and pricked ears are set with rose-cut diamonds, whose metallic foil backing gives them a soft glow, reminiscent of candlelight. Two small red cabochons complete the ensemble, representing the eyes. A witty and finely detailed naturalistic motif, discreet on the reverse and yet undeniably characteristic of its era.

Style
Victorian decorative art refers to the style of the decorative arts of the Victorian era. This period is characterized by an eclectic revival of historical styles and the introduction of intercultural influences from the Middle East and Asia into furniture, accessories, and interior decoration. Victorian design is often seen as having succumbed to a regrettable excess of ornamentation. The Arts and Crafts movement, the Aesthetic movement, the Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau all have their origins at the end of the Victorian era.

Style specifics
The Grand Victorian Period – Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called the Victorian era (1837 – 1901), into three periods of about twenty years each: the Romantic Victorian period (1837 – 1860), the Grand Victorian Period (1860 – 1880), and the Late or Aesthetic Victorian period (1880 – 1901).
We consider this to belong to the Grand Victorian Period.
This second Victorian period is famous for its ostentatious pieces set with pearls and diamonds (from South Africa). From around 1850, wealthy English people became interested in jewelry from India and Japan, which greatly inspired the jewelers of the time. This period also coincides with the death of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, which explains the predominance of mourning jewelry (set with dark and imposing stones) as characteristic jewelry of this era.
