Victorian era double serpent ring: a symbol of eternity with diamonds and rubies

Sold out
Size: 53

This remarkable vintage double serpent ring, crafted in 18-carat red gold, is a striking fusion of the late Victorian era and the early Art Nouveau period, dating from around 1900. The two serpents, symbols of eternity and wisdom, gracefully intertwine, each set with an old-cut diamond (about 0.25 ct in total), while their ruby eyes gleam with mystery. The serpents' fluid curves capture the organic aesthetic of Art Nouveau, making this piece a true expression of nature's elegance. With its timeless symbolism and captivating design, this ring is a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

Style
Between the Victorian era and Art Nouveau, Victorian decorative arts refer to the style of the decorative arts of the Victorian period. This era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historical styles, as well as for the introduction of cross-cultural influences from the Middle East and Asia into furniture, fittings, and interior decoration. Victorian design is widely regarded as having shown a regrettable excess of ornamentation.

The Arts and Crafts movement, aesthetic movement, Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau all have their origins at the end of the Victorian era. Art Nouveau (in French "Nouveau Style") is an international movement and artistic, architectural, and applied style—especially the decorative arts—which peaked at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1905).

The term "Art Nouveau" means "new art" in French. It is also known as "Jugendstil," which means "youth style" in German, after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, the Liberty style, from the London department store Liberty & Co., which popularized it. A reaction to the academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic motifs, notably floral and other plant motifs, as well as fluid and stylized curvilinear forms.

Art Nouveau is a design approach in which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, integrating art into everyday life.

Theme
Snakes and serpents – Snakes and serpents are among the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. The symbolic values they represent overlap considerably across various cultures. Part of this overlap is due to the common historical origin of contemporary symbols. However, much of this overlap is attributable to the common biological characteristics of snakes.

Much can be said about snakes. Venerated since antiquity, they are a powerful religious symbol with multiple meanings, such as death and resurrection. They have also been associated with healing and river gods, and symbolize fertility, wisdom, and the power of healing.
