This cameo antique , carved from a natural shell , is part of the tradition of cameos whose origins date back to Greco-Roman Antiquity . Initially engraved in fine stones, cameos experienced a revival during the Renaissance , then great popularity under the Napoleonic Empire , before becoming more widespread at the end of the Second Empire thanks to the use of more accessible materials. The cameo shell is sculpted from certain marine shells whose white and orange layers highlight the relief of the subject. It is distinguished from hardstone cameos by its slightly convex profile , which follows the natural shape of the shell and gives the portrait relief. Of oval shape , this model represents the right profile of a woman with a straight nose and noble bearing , in a style faithful to classical representations. The cameo is enhanced by an 18-carat yellow gold setting , marked with an eagle's head hallmark and a maker's mark.
