“Helios” citrine pendant, Restoration period, circa 1819–1838.
A substantial citrine pendant in 18k yellow gold, centered on a rotating medallion set with a superb oval-cut citrine, weighing approximately 60 cts. The stone is surrounded by a finely crafted frieze of plant motifs, made in three shades of gold. The whole is topped with two yellow gold ribbons, joined by a stylized flower, and suspended from a large bail.
French work. Trace of maker's mark.
Citrine dimensions: approximately 30 x 24.7 x 15.2 mm.
Pendant dimensions: 5.9 x 4.6 mm.
Weight: 29 g (18k – 750/1000, ram’s head hallmark – 1819-1838 – located on one of the ribbons and owl hallmarks on the bail).
Condition: This important pendant, adorned with a superb citrine, rotates perfectly on itself. It remains closed thanks to a small threaded protuberance. This most likely housed a winder. Thus, it was undoubtedly a key for a pocket watch, or even a clock. This jewel was designed to be worn around the neck, suspended from an elegant chain.
The citrine immediately catches the eye. Its golden yellow hue, close to that of gold, highlights the three gold tones of the frieze that frames it. There are some fine surface scratches, as well as slight scratches on the edges of the reverse. However, these signs of use do not affect its transparency or its brilliance.
Furthermore, the entire medallion shows traces of oxidation. These appear particularly on the frieze surrounding the citrine, as well as between the flower and the ribbons in the upper part.
In short, this jewel perfectly reflects the aesthetic of the Restoration. Its plant ornaments clearly recall the taste of the 18th century, blending elegance and finesse in every detail.
