This vintage cross pendant in silver, dating from around 1750, showcases the Rococo style. Adorned with fifteen rose-cut diamonds and senailles, each diamond is set to highlight its brilliance. Uniquely, the reverse side is treated with fire-gilding, a historical technique intended to prevent tarnishing from contact with skin and fabric, thus emphasizing the piece’s practical and artistic heritage. This pendant is a testament to the sophisticated artistry of the mid-18th century, offering a piece that resonates with the elegance and charm so prized by lovers of antique jewelry.

Style
Rococo – Rococo (more rarely roccoco), also called “Late Baroque,” is an 18th-century style that developed when Baroque artists abandoned symmetry in favor of increasingly ornate, floral, and playful designs. Rococo pieces were conceived as total works of art, with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, decorative mirrors, and tapestries complementing architecture, reliefs, and murals. It was largely supplanted by the Neoclassical style. In 1835, the Dictionnaire de l'Académie française specified that the word rococo “generally designates the type of ornament, style, and motif associated with the reign of Louis XV and the beginning of that of Louis XVI.” It thus encompasses all types of art produced around the mid-18th century in France.

Style specifics
Rococo is a decorative style that succeeded the Baroque style in France around 1730 (where it was also called rocaille). Its main characteristics are the asymmetry of ornaments and a repertoire composed largely of rockwork, shells, flowers, foliage, and scrolls. It was developed in France under Louis XV (1715-1774) and spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria, and to a lesser extent to England.

Theme
Cross – The cross is one of the oldest human symbols and is used by many religions, such as Christianity. It often represents the division of the world into four elements (or cardinal points), or the union of the concepts of divinity (the vertical line) and the world (the horizontal line). Technique
The rose-cut diamonds are set on foil. This special technique was used to enhance the brilliance of the diamonds.

Additional information The reverse of the center of the cross is hand-engraved and, although not perfectly preserved, it is still clear that the reverse was fire-gilded, an ancient technique that is no longer used.

Diamonds
Fifteen rose-cut diamonds and senailles. A senaille is a simplified rose-cut diamond, a small diamond chip sometimes with a few polished facets. We do not have the weight of the rose-cut diamonds or the senailles, unlike what is common in our profession.
All the diamonds we offer are checked by the IJGC to determine whether they are natural or synthetic, and all the diamonds in this jewel are guaranteed to be 100% natural.
