Style specifics
Baroque is an artistic and decorative style that developed just before 1600 and remained common in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style around 1730. Born in Italy, it spread to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Only a classical, more or less austere version was popular in France under Louis XIV. This style, derived from the Renaissance, is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, vigorous movement, and rich ornamentation inspired by classical sources, symmetrical as opposed to the asymmetry of the Rococo style that succeeded it.
