Stylistic Specificities: Style borrowing stylistic features from ancient Greece and the Roman Empire (hence its name: Empire). The Empire period represents the second part of the neoclassical style and shows a strong French influence. This style originated from Napoleon's desire to revive the luxurious majesty of imperial Rome. Traditional classical motifs, already present under the reign of Louis XVI, were complemented by symbols of imperial grandeur: the monogramme of the emperor and his emblem, the bee; representations of military trophies; and, after the victorious Egyptian campaigns, Egyptian motifs. To briefly characterize this style, we could focus on two fundamental concepts: massiveness and symmetry.

Technique: Intaglio - An intaglio, or engraved gem, is a small gemstone, generally semi-precious, sculpted in the Western tradition, usually with images or inscriptions on a single face. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in Antiquity, and played an important role in certain later periods. Strictly speaking, engraving refers to intaglio carving, with the design cut into the flat background of the stone. However, relief carvings, where the design stands out from the background as in almost all cameos, are also covered by this term. This activity is also called "gemstone carving," and the artists "gemstone cutters." References to ancient gemstones and intaglios in the context of jewelry almost always refer to cut stones.
