halfway between the end of the Victorian era and the Belle Époque, Victorian decorative arts refer to the style of decorative arts from the Victorian period. This era is known for its eclectic revival and interpretation of historical styles, as well as the introduction of intercultural influences from the Middle East and Asia in furniture, fittings, and interior decoration.
Victorian design is widely regarded as having shown a regrettable excess of ornamentation.
The Belle Époque is a period of European social history that began at the end of the 19th century and lasted until the First World War. Taking place during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named retrospectively, when it began to be seen as a "golden age." The great European powers, new technologies improved living conditions, and commercial arts adapted Renaissance and 18th-century styles to modern forms. In the United States, newly wealthy and emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable era was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this period overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian era and the period known as the Edwardian era.

Style specifics:
The late Victorian or Aesthetic period - Experts divide the reign of Queen Victoria, also called the Victorian era (1837-1901), into three periods of about twenty years each; the Romantic Victorian period (1837-1860), the Grand Victorian period (1860-1880), and the late Victorian or Aesthetic period (1880-1901).
We consider this to be the late Victorian or Aesthetic period.
The jewelry of this era evolved, moving from heavy pieces to smaller and more romantic ones, often with whimsical motifs. Jewelers used diamonds and brilliant gemstones to create refined and elaborate feminine pieces.

Technique:
Enameling is an ancient and widely used technique. The Egyptians of Antiquity applied enamels to pottery and stone objects. The Greeks, Celts, Russians, and Chinese of Antiquity also used enameling processes on metal objects. Enamel is the colored result of fusing glass powder onto a substrate by firing, generally between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and hardens to form a smooth, durable glassy coating on metal, glass, or ceramic. According to some sources, the word enamel comes from the Old High German smelzan (to melt) via Old French esmail. Used as a noun, “an enamel” refers to a generally small decorative object coated with a layer of enamel, such as a champlevé or cloisonné (different techniques).

Quatre sapphires. We have not checked whether these are synthetic sapphires, as this information has no influence on the value of this jewel. At the time, both natural and synthetic sapphires were used, more for their effects than for their intrinsic value.
