Vintage Bee Brooch-Pendant with Plique-à-Jour Enamel and Trembling Wings
This charming vintage bee brooch-pendant, crafted in 18-carat yellow gold, features delicate plique-à-jour enamel wings that flutter with movement, a technique known as "en tremblant." The bee, a symbol of diligence and immortality, is adorned with sparkling diamonds that add a touch of brilliance to its intricate design. The beating wings are imbued with playful joy, bringing the jewel to life with every movement. A true representative of its era, this piece authentically reflects the craftsmanship and style of its time, resolutely vintage and not a reproduction of earlier periods.

Theme
Bee – The bee, present in the cultures of the ancient Near East and the Aegean Sea, was considered the sacred insect connecting the natural world to the underworld. Found in funerary decorations, Mycenaean tholos tombs even had the shape of beehives. Bee motifs are also found in Mayan cultures, for example Ah-Muzen-Cab, the bee god, found in Mayan ruins, probably designating honey-producing cities (which valued honey as food of the gods).
In ancient Egypt, the bee was an insignia of royalty, particularly associated with Lower Egypt, where there may even have been a king of the bees in pre-dynastic times. After the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt, this symbol was incorporated into the title, generally preceding the pharaoh's throne name. The bee, symbol of immortality and resurrection, was the royal emblem of the Merovingians, revived by Napoleon. The bee is also the heraldic emblem of the Barberini family.
In heraldry, the bee symbolizes diligence and tireless effort. A person is said to be as busy as a bee when they work relentlessly, regardless of schedules or breaks. (Source: Wikipedia)

Technique
Plique-à-jour is an enameling decoration technique that consists of drawing the pattern into the metal and filling it with transparent enamels in one or several colors, without any backing, so that the effect is similar to that of a stained glass window. This effect is clearly visible in one of the photos we took with backlighting.
Additional information
Tremblant or Trembleuse – Tremblant means "trembling" in French. It is a jewel adorned with a flower or another motif, the top of which is set with protruding rigid wires (decorated with gemstones) that vibrate when the piece is subjected to movement. Sometimes, these protrusions are fine coiled springs in silver, like those used in the 18th century, but some examples were made with tubular rods enclosing a steel spring band.
