This remarkable diamond ring from the 16th and 17th centuries captivates with its historical charm and the finesse of its craftsmanship. Probably originating from northwestern Europe, it is adorned with nine table-cut pink diamonds set on foil, showcasing the earliest advances in diamond cutting at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. The table cut, one of the first faceting techniques developed, is specific to this era and a key element of the jewelry of that time. The ring's design embodies the spirit of its era, while the band raises intriguing questions: was it born with the ring or was it replaced later during its long life? In the description below, we delve deeper into the arguments surrounding this point. Imagine owning and wearing a jewel that has crossed the ages for 400 years, carrying centuries of stories and untold historical moments.

Country of origin
Although it bears no readable control mark, we believe it is of northwestern European (Dutch/Belgian) origin.

Style
This ring illustrates the stylistic essence of the 1600s, capturing the spirit of transition of the era. Although it does not strictly belong to the Baroque or Renaissance movements, its design reflects the artistic trends and craftsmanship of the time. It resonates with the spirit of its era, blending elements from both periods without being clearly linked to either.

The upper part of the ring, dating from around 1600, features a use of stones that strongly connects it to this era. However, it remains difficult to classify it as purely Baroque or Renaissance. It is interesting to note that the lower part (the band) could date from a slightly later period, though this is not definitive. The hallmarks found on the band provide additional clues, suggesting the possibility of different timelines for the components of the ring, adding to its intriguing character and historical depth.

Technique
The rose-cut diamonds are set on foil. This special technique was used to enhance the brilliance of the diamonds.

Additional information
As mentioned previously, we cannot state with certainty that the band (also called the ring band) originally belonged to the upper part. It is not uncommon for the band to be replaced over time, and in this case, the color of the gold of the band appears slightly more yellow than the reddish hue of the upper part. However, this is also not definitive proof, as the original goldsmith may have wanted such a contrast. We will explore this point further in the section dedicated to hallmarks.

Diamonds
Nine rose-cut diamonds cut in table style. We do not have the weight of the diamonds, which is normal in our profession when it comes to rose cuts.

- All diamonds, regardless of their size or shape, in our vintage and antique jewelry are verified as 100% natural by the IJGC laboratory.

- We do not sell synthetic (lab-created) diamonds.

Birthstones
Diamond is the birthstone (or month stone) for the month of April.

The hallmarks present on the shank include:

- A cornucopia, used in the Southern Netherlands from 1815 to 1832, specifically for small gold works without accessories.
- A small Gothic “r”, indicating a new Belgian mark after 1830, applied to jewelry that was already in circulation before being subjected to a new inspection.
- An “L” with wavy lines above, which stylistically suggests an 18th-century origin or potentially much older.

These hallmarks on the ring suggest a later date than the setting style and the use of table-cut rose diamonds would indicate. All these hallmarks are found (which is not unusual) only on the ring shank and not on the upper part, which suggests that the latter is older than the shank.
