20 French francs - Pi gold coin of Louis XVIII
This French Marengo, featuring the portrait of King Louis XVIII, was struck between 1816 and 1824 by the French government. It is a coin with a relatively brief period of issuance, which makes it a particularly interesting piece for collectors. Like other French coins of its time, the Marengo has a face value and is an official currency, but what sets it apart is its rarity and historical significance, making it even more sought after.
On the obverse of the coin appears the portrait of Louis XVIII, occupying a large part of the face. Around his profile is engraved the inscription "LOUIS XVIII ROI DE FRANCE," accompanied by a particular detail representing a horse's head. On the reverse appears the king's emblem: a crowned shield surrounded by royal drapes, with the year of minting and the face value indicated below the shield.
The reign of Louis XVIII, although marked by difficulties, was a crucial period in French history. After Napoleon Bonaparte's escape from the island of Elba, Louis XVIII was temporarily deposed, but Napoleon's return was brief and inglorious. In 1815, Louis XVIII regained the throne. He is remembered not only for his gold coinage but also for his commitment to bringing the monarchy closer to the people, marking a turning point in the relationship between power and the population. He was also the last French monarch to reign until his death.
