Edwardian gold and scarab brooch silver sterling with rose-cut diamonds, onyx and rubies
Dating from the Edwardian era, this imposing and impressive rhinoceros scarab brooch is set with rose-cut diamonds on an 18-carat gold body and silver Sterling. At the center of the head is a large and beautiful rose-cut diamond, surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds, with two ruby cabochons as eyes. The insect's abdomen is a remarkable onyx carved in the shape of a moon, perfectly integrated into the body of the piece. The black of the onyx is contrasted by a patina. silverdark; the diamonds sparkle and stand out on it. The insect's six legs are made of 18-karat gold, the feet of which transform into stylized curls, a motif that is repeated throughout the piece.
Incredible attention to detail. The underside of the brooch reveals an 18k gold cage-like setting for the onyx, as well as details on the feet: masterful work. Hallmarked for 18k gold and acid tested forsilver sterling.
The piece is composed of 89 rose-cut diamonds, totaling 2.5 carats. They range in size from 4.75 mm to 1.5 mm, with the largest diamond located in the center of the scarab's head. The diamonds are JKL color and SI clarity. The two ruby cabochons measure 2 mm.
The brooch measures 8.5 x 3.2 cm and weighs 42.7 grams. In its original antique box.
