This charming 14K gold medallion charm is part of Kirsten’s Corner’s signature “Cute as a Button” collection. A mold was made from a Victorian-era button, then the piece was cast in 14K gold.
It depicts the Egyptian vulture goddess Nekhbet, protector of Upper Egypt and its rulers. She is the tutelary goddess of fertility and childbirth, and is said to have been present at the birth of Osiris. She is called the “Mother of mothers, who has existed since the Beginning.” Often depicted spreading her wings above the pharaoh, she appears here in profile, with a lotus flower, symbol of creation, rebirth, and regeneration. The pendant also features many Egyptian motifs, including a scarab and a tablet of hieroglyphs. The details, done in bas-relief, are very intricate.
“Button” charms were a fashion in the Victorian era and were considered “memory strings.” They are a unique way to add personal meaning and symbolism to fashion.
