About this model:
Under his creative vision, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche started a new company called Porsche Design in 1972. Just like his car designs (911), he preferred a clean Germanic design with a touch of distinctive flair.
In 1978 Porsche Design collaborated with IWC to create a unique watch design with a compass and an emergency beacon mirror fitted inside the case. The case and the bracelet were made from a special hardened aluminum alloy with a PVD coating added on top. This model was designed with a hinged case that allows the top portion to flip open by pressing the buttons on the side of the lugs. Inside, it reveals a compass and an emergency beacon mirror. In addition, all magnetic components were replaced with non-magnetic components to prevent any interference with the accuracy of the compass.
The Reference 3551 is an exploration watch with a distinctive twist: a moonphase complication on a tool watch. While its exact purpose remains a mystery, there are compelling theories. For hunters (Hunting was Butzi Porsche’s passion), the moonphase offers a natural guide, as German federal law prohibits the use of artificial light in the field—making full moons essential. For sailors, it provides a practical way to anticipate tidal changes, complementing the integrated compass.
This unique blend of functionality and originality makes the Reference 3551 an iconic timepiece in the Porsche Design x IWC legacy.

MOVEMENT:
Under the technical leadership of Jürgen King, the IWC-tuned ETA 2892 became the IWC caliber 375, a 22 jewel, 28,800 a/h movement with shock absorber and straight-line lever escapement. The watch also had monometallic balance, self-compensating flat balance spring, index regulator, ball-bearing rotor, and hacking seconds function, with a rotor made of 21 karat paramagnetic gold.
The caliber 3754 in this watch is an evolution of the 375 due to the introduction of the moonphase.
