CHAMPAGNAT yellow gold brooch stylizing an owl, French work circa 1960. Stylized owl perched on an onyx branch, textured gold body and wings adorned with round-cut citrines, the head decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds accented with circular ruby cabochons for the eyes and citrine cabochon ears, branded JCC, with maker's mark 'JC', numbered 87, French silversmith's marks, with maker's box, length 5.3 cm, width 6.5 cm. Born in 1923, Parisian jeweler Jean-Claude Champagnat (1923-1988) was immersed in the world of jewelry from a young age. He began working in his father's workshop, located near the Arc de Triomphe on Rue des Acacias in Paris. As a young adult, he worked for one of the manufacturers of Cartier, acquiring as much knowledge and experience as he could before taking over the family business. During his career, he created pieces for renowned designers Christian Dior, Madame Grès, and Hermès in the 1950s and 1960s. He was well known for his unique, sculptural creations inspired by animals and plants.
