An exquisite Flemish heart pendant dating from around 1700, emblematic of the vivacity of the Rococo, with its elaborate design rooted in Baroque art. This Belgian piece, lacking any control hallmarks, yet proudly attributed to this era, embodies romance through its heart-shaped silhouette set with thirty-eight rose-cut diamonds. Adorned with a royal crown or a trophy of love, it reflects the triumph of love with symbols of fervor – torch, quiver, bow, and laurel – intertwined in a harmonious composition, crafted in silver fineness.

Style:
Rococo - Rococo (more rarely roccoco), also called "late Baroque," is an 18th-century style that developed when Baroque artists abandoned symmetry to adopt an increasingly ornamental, floral, and playful approach. Rococo pieces were designed as total works of art, with elegant and ornate furniture, small sculptures, decorative mirrors, and tapestries complementing architecture, reliefs, and wall paintings. It was largely supplanted by the neoclassical style. In 1835, the Dictionary of the French Academy specified that the word rococo "generally designates the type of ornament, style, and motif associated with the reign of Louis XV and the beginning of that of Louis XVI." It thus encompasses all types of art produced around the middle of the 18th century in France.

Style characteristics:
Baroque is an artistic and decorative style that developed shortly before 1600 and remained common in Europe until the emergence of the Rococo style around 1730. Born in Italy, it spread to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. Only a classical, more or less austere version was popular in France under Louis XIV. This style, stemming from the Renaissance, is characterized by lively, curved, and exuberant forms, vigorous movement, and rich ornamentation inspired by classical sources, symmetrical as opposed to the asymmetry of the Rococo style that succeeded it.

Theme:
Flemish heart - One of the most unique and widespread Flemish regional jewels is the heart-shaped diamond pendant, called the "Vlaams hart" (Flemish heart in Dutch). These hearts were fashionable in the 19th century and were mainly made in silver gold-plated (see also the technique of silver on gold). A Flemish heart is a heart-shaped field set with rose-cut diamonds and/or senailles, suspended beneath a crown.
There are two possible types of crowning:
1) The crowning consists of horizontal tendrils adorned with diamonds, resting on a smooth, openwork-cut band decorated with small flattened rhombic bars. The tendrils at the top lean slightly above this openwork-cut band, towards the cross itself, thus emphasizing the unity of the jewel.
2) The crowning as a love trophy. A set of four elements: a torch and a quiver crossing each other, intertwined with a horizontal bow, all held together by a laurel. The slight inclination of the two ends of the bow refers to the cross of Saint Andrew. Torch, quiver, and bow are typical attributes of Love (Eros), while the laurel evokes the triumph of love. This combination was already used by the Greeks and Romans of Antiquity, then, of course, during the Renaissance, and enjoyed immense success in France under Louis XVI (1774-1793).
