Rare old necklace called Slavery in 18kt yellow gold (owl hallmark) decorated with three plaques with floral motifs enhanced with enamel.
the three medallions are linked together by three chains.
Work from the 19th Century, most certainly French.
Gross weight: 4.60 g
Length: 36.00 cm
Pendant height: 2.00 cm
Condition: slight micro scratches, shock, and oxidation on the gold parts, and slight loss of enamel, see photos.
The “slave” necklace appeared in the mid-18th century. It was given by the fiancé to his fiancée.
There are different theories concerning the term "slavery": for some, it would find its origin in the Savoyard and Geneva tradition in reference to the expression "to chain the wife"; for others, it has no connection with the notion of deprivation of liberty but rather with the sentimental attachment which binds spouses together; and finally, others say that the abundance of chains which make up this necklace is enough to justify the name.
