Beautiful and thick cameo made of four-layer agate, which represents a lapidary feat. The bottom layer is in gray chalcedony, the carnation is in calcite, the garland of vine leaves and the head of the panther in brown chalcedony and the bunch of grapes in calcite. The subject represents Ariadne (Ariadne), the young wife of Bacchus, in bust, in profile on the left. The young Cretan princess is recognizable by the bunches of grapes which adorn her hair and the panther skin spread over her shoulder. The style is neo-classical in use since the second half of the 18th century. This cameo is striking both for its color and for the high quality of execution, the artist having succeeded in giving both relief and sensitivity to his subject.
This cameo is mounted in a very pretty gold brooch setting from the romantic period, decorated with very fine carving.
