"Patriotic" Filigree Necklace
In 18k rose gold, with filigree oval links alternating with small simple oval links. It holds a patriotic medal from the 1st World War in yellow gold at the neckline, depicting a cannon (a 75 mm) topped with the motto "Glory to our 75".
Necklace circa 1900; later medal, 1914-1915.
French work.
Length: approximately 40 cm.
Weight: 19.3 g (Necklace and medal in 18k gold – 750/1000 – horse head hallmark (1838-1919); clasp in silver gilded – 800/1000 – boar’s head (1838-1962)).
Condition: Perfect condition.
History and style:
The elongated oval clasp carabiner is quite typical of the chains that held pocket watches, still widely used at the beginning of the 20th century. The presence of a patriotic medal with a cannon, a rather masculine subject, even if it was added later, seems to support this hypothesis. The transformation into a necklace would only be later.
This patriotic medal is a witness to the First World War. Made in 1914-1915, it celebrates the 75 mm, the French cannon considered the best cannon of the time. Hence this emblematic representation.
“Glory to our 75” is and remains a motto engraved in history which reminds us of the sacrifices of our soldiers.
