Rare gold ring with sexagonal "pie mold" bezel (more or less regular structure with straight or slightly concave bands), on cup, decorated with a polished sapphire in flattened cabochon. The oval section ring is entirely engraved with chevrons and small circles and is attached to the cup with a slight projection. The sapphire, probably from Ceylon, is of a larger size than what is usually found on rings of this period. It has a small surface size depression and a slight crack.
Magnificent state of conservation, with the original stone.

This ring undoubtedly belonged to a high-ranking man, probably a prelate. For people in the Middle Ages, sapphire was the most beautiful gem, before ruby came into favor during the 14th century. Sapphire, linked to Heaven and also to the Virgin Mary, was particularly prized for episcopal rings. But the Saint-Louis ring was also set with a sapphire intaglio.
